A sales funnel is the path a stranger takes from first seeing your offer to buying it, usually a landing page, a checkout, and a few follow-up emails. Setting one up is mostly ordinary work done in the right order. This page covers that order, what to skip, and which guide to read for your situation. If you'd rather build than read, go straight to the How to Build Your First Sales Funnel: Step-by-Step Tutorial.

What "funnel setup" actually involves

People talk about funnels as if they were magic. In practice you are connecting five things:

If any of these is missing, the funnel leaks. Most "my funnel doesn't work" problems trace back to a weak offer or a broken connection, not to a lack of fancy features. If the vocabulary is new to you, Funnel Building Basics explains the terms without the jargon.

The setup order that saves headaches

Do these in sequence. Skipping ahead is how people end up rebuilding pages twice.

  1. Write the offer in two sentences. Who it's for, and what changes for them. If you can't, no software will fix that.
  2. Map the funnel on paper. One entry point, one product, one checkout. Boxes and arrows are enough.
  3. Pick your software. More on this below. Don't spend a month on this step.
  4. Connect your domain. A domain is your web address. Pointing it at your funnel can take time to take effect, so do it early.
  5. Connect payments. Run a test purchase yourself, and check that the confirmation and receipt actually arrive.
  6. Build the pages. Use a template, replace the words with your own, and keep the design plain.
  7. Set up the emails. A delivery or welcome email is the minimum. A short follow-up sequence is optional at first.
  8. Add tracking. At the very least, know how many people visited and how many bought.
  9. Test it like a stranger. Use a different device, ideally a phone, and click through every step.

Steps 4, 5, 7 and 8 are where launches most often stall. The Funnel Setup Launch Checklist: Domain, Payments, Email and Tracking walks through each so nothing gets forgotten the day you go live.

What to skip at the start

Here is what I'd leave for later:

None of this is forbidden. It's just easy to spend a week on extras while the core page still has an unclear headline.

Choosing funnel software without overthinking it

Funnel software generally falls into two camps: tools that only build pages and checkouts, and all-in-one platforms that also handle email, scheduling, memberships and more. Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on how many separate tools you'd otherwise be stitching together, and how much you want to manage.

A few questions are worth answering before you compare anything:

To see what Funnel Foundry includes, read the All-in-One Platform Features page. For cost questions, Funnel Software Pricing & Free Options is the place to start. When you're ready to weigh tools against each other, Funnel Software Reviews & Comparisons lays out the options side by side. Whatever you read anywhere, including here, confirm current pricing, limits and features on each vendor's official site before you decide, because these details change.

Use cases: the funnel depends on what you sell

Coaches and consultants

High-priced services often work better with a conversation than a direct checkout. The funnel's job may be to get someone to book a call, with the sale happening on the call. That changes what you build: an application or booking page, reminder emails, and clear expectations. The Sales Funnel for Coaches: Setup Blueprint and the Best Software to Run It covers that layout.

Course creators

A course funnel usually has a free lead magnet (a small giveaway in exchange for an email address), a sales page, a checkout, and a delivery system for the lessons. The sticking point is often where the course itself is hosted and how it connects to checkout. See Sales Funnel for Course Creators: Setup Blueprint and Platform Picks.

Starting on a budget

You can learn a lot on a free plan, as long as you know its limits. Free plans usually restrict something, such as contacts, funnels or features, and those restrictions change. The How to Build a Funnel in Systeme.io on the Free Plan walkthrough shows the process in one specific tool. Check Systeme.io's site for what the free plan currently includes.

Switching platforms later

Sooner or later, many people outgrow their first tool or just get tired of the bill. Moving isn't always a one-click job. Pages built in one editor often can't be exported as-is into another, so expect to rebuild some of it. Our short answer on moving a funnel from ClickFunnels to GoHighLevel explains what typically transfers and what doesn't. Before you commit to any platform, ask what leaving would involve.

A realistic way to start

Build the smallest version that can take a payment: one offer, one landing page, one checkout, one delivery email. Test it end to end. Then launch it and see what happens. A funnel can't guarantee sales, because results depend on your offer, your audience and your traffic, but a simple one that works shows you what to improve. If money or tax questions come up, such as sales tax, refunds policy wording or privacy rules for collecting emails, check with a qualified accountant or legal professional in your area rather than relying on a software guide.
